When you make or update your will, take a few minutes also to record the things your executor and whānau may need to know. Where is your original will kept? Who provides your life insurance and KiwiSaver? What would you like for your funeral or tangi? Anything else?
Te Hokinga ā Wairua, the New Zealand Government’s End of Life Service, lets you record your wishes and practical information securely online. Use your RealMe login to save your plan.
You can come back any time to add or update information.
You can record where to find important documents, which digital accounts or assets may need attention, who your insurers and KiwiSaver provider are, wishes for your remains, funeral or other gathering, and anything else your executor or family may need to know. You can also record personal details that will help someone register your death.
Share your plan online with your executor or someone else you trust by entering their details in the service.
You can also download or print a copy. Keep it alongside your signed will – but separate from it.
This information will help your executor and family. It will also save money if professionals don’t have to spend hours tracking down your assets. It will stay private. (In contrast, if you put this information in your will, and if probate is needed, all that information becomes public through the High Court.)
That said, if you want to change who inherits or who acts as your executor, update your will, not this plan. Do not use this plan to record anything about who gets what – otherwise it will have to be treated as an unsigned will, which makes things more complicated.
Visit Te Hokinga ā Wairua and choose “Create a plan”.
